Dental Implants simulate your natural teeth aesthetically as well as functionally. Thereby, they not only restore your natural smile and facial aesthetics but also offer you the experience of enjoying your life in a merrier and healthier way.
Dental Implant Surgery, much like any other surgery, brings out certain modifications in your lifestyle, especially dietary habits. They ensure that you are able to enjoy your choice of foods without much restrictions, nonetheless, some dietary modifications should be followed to keep these tiny metallic angels in your mouth, as stress-free as you can, so that these can stay with you for as long as a lifetime.
Post-surgical dietary guidelines, if followed thoroughly, improve the overall success rate of your dental implants, reassuring comfortability and brisk up the healing process. You must not consume foods that unnecessarily exert pressure on your implants and hamper their fusion with the bone and cause you discomfort.
What Are the Dietary Guidelines After Dental Implant Surgery?
Most importantly, do not skip meals. Provide your body with full nutrition that it requires to speed up the recovery and strengthen your immunity. However, it is advised that you should not consume anything until 30 minutes after the surgery.
If you have any underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes, you must follow the special dietary requirements as recommended to you by your physician.
It is advised that you consume only soft and liquid diet post-surgery, until you can resume with normal, solid diet within a few weeks after the surgery. Be gentle with your newly placed teeth.
Stay hydrated. We keep emphasizing over this, and yet it is the key to keep most of your health problems at bay.
You must avoid smoking nicotine and drinking alcohol at all costs.
Remember – The choice of foods may vary between patients but the major dietary goal should be the same, that is, not to cause any distress to the dental implants while maintaining the nutrition quotient at the same time.
What Is the Dietary Timeline After the Dental Implant Surgery?
- Soft “No-Chew” Diet : For The First Week After Surgery
- Soft “Easy-to-Chew” Diet : Second Week Onwards
- Normal Solid Diet : Around 6 Months After Surgery Or When Osseointegration Is Complete
What Can I Eat on the Same Day of Dental Implant Surgery?
Immediately after the implant surgery, your jawbone is quite fragile, acclimating to the new, foreign substance placed onto it. Therefore, to prevent any undue stress on the bone, it is imperative that you consume only soft and liquid food items or anything that does not need to be chewed, for the first 24 hours post-surgery.
You must refrain from consuming any sizzling hot foods and drinks as they encourage inflammation at the site of surgery and complicate the healing process.
Rather, you must only consume cold food items and beverages including, yoghurt, ice creams, fruit custards, fresh fruit and vegetable juices, porridge, milkshakes, buttermilk, other dairy products, smoothies, boiled and mashed vegetables and fruits after cooling, boiled eggs after cooling at room temperature, for the first day.
Cold foodstuffs are simply soothing for your gums as they maintain the numbness around the surgical wound and also promote healing by ensuring adequate blood supply to the site of surgery. Cold temperature basically causes the constriction of blood vessels and promote healing.
Ensure high protein, sufficient caloric content and less carbohydrates and fats in your diet to fulfill your dietary requirements.
What Dietary Precautions Should I Take After the Dental Implant Surgery?
- Do not spit or rinse your mouth, as it can cause dislodgement of blood clot from the surgical site and interfere with healing.
- Do not suck up the beverages with a straw, rather stick to drinking from a glass / cup / bottle for as long as two weeks.
- If you are a patient who has undergone sinus lifting or bone grafting, you must avoid using straws for as long as a month.
- Avoid carbonated drinks and alcoholic beverages.
- Avoid sticky, hard or abrasive food items and raw fruits with seeds.
- Avoid smoking.
What Should I Eat a Week After the Dental Implant Surgery?
Solid but tender food items can be gradually reintroduced in your diet, second week onwards to be continued up to at least next three to six months when your temporary prosthesis shall be replaced with a permanent one.
This should preferably comprise of a proteinaceous diet because it helps to boost up the immune system and encourage rapid repair and healing of the tissues.
High protein food items such as omelette loaded with vegetables, scrambled eggs, egg curry, boiled eggs, pulses, legumes, lentils, finely chopped fish, chicken and meat, soaked nuts, dairy products including cottage cheese and yoghurt must be included in your day-to-day diet.
Dairy products are especially crucial as they provide the calcium required to strengthen the bone, thereby, promoting the efficient healing of the jawbone and judicious osseointegration of the implant with the bone.
Switch to soft cereals, whole grains, oatmeal, soft fruits like banana, melon, grapes, vegetable soups, boiled rice, steam-cooked meats and vegetables.
What Foods Should I Not Consume At All?
In order to sustain your dental implants for an indefinite period of time, it is recommended that you refrain from hard foods such as chicken, mutton, nuts, raw fruits and vegetables, crunchy chips and sticky, sugary, processed foods such as candies, chocolates, caramel, chewing gums, and very spicy and highly acidic foods, as much as you can.
Sugary drinks especially strong coloured beverages must be avoided as they may stain the prosthesis and compromise your dental aesthetics. Stay away from alcoholic beverages and nicotine. Try to cut on your consumption of coffee and tea as well.
