Skin pigmentation or hyper pigmentation is one of the most common aesthetic concern in individuals these days. As our age progresses the skin texture changes constantly and develops brown spots, imperfections and pigmentation issues. These pigmentation make people conscious of their image in the society and affects confidence.
Overproduction of melanin from melanocytes the pigment cell causes these disorders. The exact etiology is not known but it is commonly associated with hormonal changes especially after pregnancy, pollution, age, certain medications or due to over exposure of sun. It can be seen due to post inflammatory hyperpigmentation also such as that left by acne or psoriasis and previous aesthetic treatments.
Now the treatment part falls into three main groups: Topical agents, Chemical Peels and Lasers. All these are non invasive procedure and are performed in a single sitting which allows the patient to carry on with their work after treatment.
TOPICAL AGENTS
Triple combination topical therapy is followed which comprises of Hydroquinone, Tretinoin and Corticosteroid. These products go deeper into the cellular layers and reduces discoloration which improves the skin texture overall.
CHEMICAL PEELS
Chemical peel can reveal hidden inner beauty. This is done by exfoliating the damaged skin. Various peels are available like Alpha hydroxyl acid peel, Salicylic peel and Jessners peel. They are applied in clinical settings.
During this procedure the outermost layer of the skin is removed and the chemical peel is applied which penetrates the skin and stimulates new cell growth.
The most commonly used method. It is used in patients experiencing premature age or sun damaged skin. Topical anaesthesia is applied on the skin and then laser is used and the treatment just takes around 20-30 minutes.
Laser is applied to the damaged skin and the patient feels a cooling sensation with slight stinging feeling. These unwanted pigments on the skin absorbs the light energy and naturally gets eliminated from the body. The pigment spots appears lighter after that and the skin appears more youthful and rejuvenated. Only slight discomfort is experienced by the patient.
