What is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease. It affects the supporting structures surrounding the teeth. Left untreated, gum disease can lead to tooth loss.
What causes Bone Loss around your Teeth?
In case of Periodontitis, the bacteria gradually eats away at the underlying jaw bone and at the periodontal ligament that connects the tooth to the bone. The most common cause of bone loss is unreplaced lost tooth. When teeth are missing, the jawbone resorbs due to the lack of stimulation normally provided by chewing and biting.
There is a 25% decrease of bone during the first year of tooth loss which continues unless the missing teeth are replaced.
Denture and dental bridges do not provide this stimulation, and denture can actually stimulate bone loss.
Gradual progression of bone loss until the face appears collapsed.
What types of bone loss are there?
There are two types of bone loss:
- Vertical bone loss- when cavities around one or two teeth, resulting in cone shaped hollows along the roots of the teeth.
- Horizontal bone loss- occurs along a line of teeth, affecting all of them. In this case, bone re-growth is not possible, so the purpose of treatment is to prevent further bone loss.

What is Periodontal Bone Regeneration?
Bone regeneration is a treatment to get bone to grow back around the tooth after bone and ligament loss caused by gum disease. The main aim is to restore the tooth to its original state before damage seeks in. The treatment also increases the life expectancy of the tooth!
The Bone Regeneration Procedure
During this procedure, Dr. Sachdeva, best dentist in Ashok Vihar places a biocompatible membrane between the gum and the bone, which acts as a barrier. This barrier prevents down growth of the gum into the underlying bone as it heals. In some cases, a bone graft or tissue stimulating proteins may be placed under the membrane to encourage your body’s natural ability to regenerate bone and tissue. Membranes around teeth are typically designed to dissolve away or reabsorb after a few weeks. There are many options to enhance support for teeth and to restore your bone to a healthy level.
