Thus during this time it is very important that folks during this period we can follow some simple steps to keep your teeth safe and clean.
How can I keep my teeth healthy during this lockdown?
The lifestyle has changed drastically during this pandemic and most of us are now working from home and hardly going out of our house. During these times we can keep our teeth healthy and sparkling clean by just following these few steps:
a) Brush twice regularly
You should brush your teeth twice daily i.e morning (before breakfast) and night (after dinner) with a use of an appropriate brush and toothpaste. Please note that while brushing you shall use only a small amount of toothpaste i.e pea size.
b) Daily floss
After brushing your teeth you should floss your teeth, which helps in removing soft food that has been stuck between your teeth. This food can not be usually felt by you but it is present between your teeth.
c) Tongue clean
The tongue is a potential source of lot of bacteria which are harbored there if it is not cleaned post brushing. We should clean our tongue once every day so that we do not cause more bacteria to be formed there.
d) Use mouthwashes
You can squish a cap of mouthwash right after you have your lunch or in between snack times. Mouthwash helps to decrease the bacterial load in the mouth and this ultimately decreasing the risk of cavities.
e) Intake of healthy, fibrous and balanced diet
Having a high fiber and a balanced diet is essential for getting all the essential nutrients needed for your body. Avoid eating sticky foods like sugar candies, chocolates or cakes as they tend to stick on the teeth and greatly increase the chances of having more cavities. However it is important to know this that now a days everyone is taking high dose of Vitamin C in either energy drinks for increasing their immunity, but this is not good for the teeth as it is acidic and harms the teeth by causing erosion. So we all should keep a check on the amount of vitamin C.
f) Drink less sugary drinks
We should avoid having high sugar drinks such as soda, soft drinks and fruit juices as they can harm the tooth surfaces. Decrease the intake of drinks like coffee and tea as they cause staining of teeth. We should try as much as we can replace these drinks with water (flavored or non-flavored) which will keep you hydrated
g) Optimum changes of toothbrush
The toothbrush should be changed once in every three months or even earlier than that whenever the bristles of your brush get frayed. It is a known fact that brush have a high tendency of accumulating bacteria via the saliva and blood that contacts while brushing.
h) Do not share your toothbrush
The toothbrush should never be share no matter how close you are to the person or if you are related.
During the pandemic if anyone is tested positive there are high chances of spreading the virus via the brush, thus during these times the toothbrushes shall be kept separately with the toothpaste and don’t share it with anyone. If you have been tested positive for COVID-19 it is recommended that the moment that you have recovered, you shall not use your previous toothbrush again. You should also change her toothpaste.
i) No smoking
You should avoid smoking as it decreases the blood supply to the teeth and thus increasing the chances of having cavities.
