As the person ages the jawbone without teeth for one reason or another, it starts deteriorating with disuse. There’s a famous saying “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”, so if you’re the sorts who’ve been suffering with the same condition/problem, there’s certainly a treatment which helps you to re-grow a new bone at the deficient site – it is known by the term “bone grafting”.
The term Bone grafting might sound bizarre to you, but it’s not as strange as it seems to be.
This treatment increases the strength, appearance & capability of jawbone, also allows you to decide on for the procedures like dental implants, as dental implants need good support & strength from the amount of bone been developed with bone grafting.
When choosing dental implants as your imperative treatment option, you certainly deserve to know the types & how they are accomplished in your treatment.
Autogenous/Autologous/Autograft
Autogenous bone graft: bone is transplanted from one site to another in the same individual. The bone is harvested from chin, ramus, angle of mandible, tibia, iliac crest.

With the use of autografts there are less chances of graft rejection, since we use patient’s own bone which is healthy & live & has all three new bone regeneration properties- osteoconductive, osteoinductive & osteogenic. These properties help to stimulate growth & restore the function of deficient bone. Hence it is considered to be the gold standard amongst the bone grafting procedures.
Since the graft needs to be harvested from the different site in the body, it’s a bit invasive procedure, which is considered to be a stumbling block to this procedure.
Allogenic bone grafts
The bone is harvested from cadaver .i.e. dead bone. In order to avoid cross-contamination & make a counter balance to immune reactions the dead bone has to undergo many treatment sequences. Since these grafts do not contain living cells, also to avoid risk of disease transmission, these grafts are barely used in practice.
Xenogenic bone graft
To stimulate bone regeneration, bone is harvested from animals, usually bone of bovine origin. Xenograft either can be used alone or with allograft. The organic material is completely removed, which releases it from all possibilities of infection & makes it non-immunogenic & safe to use.
Alloplastic grafts
Alloplastic materials are synthetically derived. Alloplastic materials are- calcium phosphates (hydroxyapatite & tricalcium phosphate) & calcium sulphate.
The mechanical properties of these artificial grafts are similar to those of bone. Amongst the other synthetic grafts, due to good osteoconduction property hydroxyapatite is the most commonly used, thus it is widely used for regeneration procedures.
