In this era of advanced technology & finite time, patient’s urge to reach the conclusion of their illness is highly strong. There’s nothing wrong in knowing something, but misdiagnosing yourself can be deceptive, as they say “little knowledge is a dangerous thing”.
Undoubtedly there’s incalculable information available on google, but it’s crucial to say that whatever you read is always correct.
Numerous diseases may show the same signs & symptoms but there’s always a differential diagnosis which helps your doctor to differentiate between them & make a final diagnosis, which you might miss yourself.
For example- a tooth pain can be due to various reasons like: decay, dentin hypersensitivity, trauma etc. But, the final diagnosis can only be confirmed by making a visit to your dentist.
Since, your dentist will clinically & radiographically evaluate the affected tooth, & bestow the right treatment needed according to the final diagnosis. Whereas, you yourself cannot discover the cause behind the pain you were suffering from.
Along with self-diagnosed patients we also come across patients with taboos in dental treatment like:
- Extraction of maxillary teeth can lead to loss of eye sight.
- After delivery, woman should not brush her teeth, as brushing leads to loosening.
- Scaling leads to loosening of teeth so, do not opt for scaling by the dental surgeon.
- Neem tree chew sticks, abrasive powders like dabur lal dant manjan are way beyond better than toothbrush & toothpaste.
There are endless taboos according to the naive patients. Good patient education can lessen the irrelevant thoughts.
So to wrap it all up, self-diagnosing can be misleading & have deleterious effect on one’s mental health. For one reason or another, if you don’t trust your doctor’s diagnosis, rather than searching on net discuss with them.
