Broken limb is a big issue, right? But broken tooth until and unless painful is just okay! Fractured tooth that you don’t care about, might cause problem in the future and needs professional help, also the painful broken tooth needs to be taken care of right away. Teeth might get cracked due to accidents, assaults, biting or chewing unusually hard substances, using teeth for purposes other than chewing food, extremely forceful clenching or grinding of teeth, untreated dental decay, crooked teeth, teeth that have undergone root canal therapy and have not received a crown, teeth with temporary fillings for extended periods of time (generally over a month). So, here is an easy and understandable guide to dental treatment and repair for chipped, cracked, fractured, displaced and knocked out teeth.
Craze Lines
- These are superficial cracks in the enamel which has no sensation.
- One should inform his/her dentist about this at the next regular check up and get necessary preventive measure in order to avoid larger stress fracture on affected teeth.
Fracture
- Depending upon the severity one can classify tooth fracture into – Mild (Enamel fracture), Moderate (Enamel and Dentin fracture) and Severe (Enamel, Dentin and Pulp involving fracture)
- Mild fracture results in chipped of edges and thus leads to sharp edges of the tooth, whereas moderate and severe fracture present with sensitivity and pain.
- Mild fracture can be treated at the next regular check up while moderate and severe fracture require immediate attention and might undergo restoration or Root Canal Treatment and capping.
Root Fracture
- Root fracture is usually not visible, so persistent increasing pain in the teeth, followed by trauma may need professional help as it is indicative of tooth root fracture.
- The dentist will either splint the root segments or remove the affected part of the root, worst cases need extraction.
Displacement
- Tooth can be displaced away from the socket, shoved inside the socket or can get loose, any change in position or height of the tooth following trauma is displacement of tooth. It causes pain and swelling in the affected area.
- This dental emergency must be consulted within 24 hours. The dentist may reposition your tooth or can provide flexible splint depending upon the diagnosis.
Avulsion
- Tooth is completely knocked out of the socket in this case. Pain and profuse bleeding is observed along with swelling in a few cases.
- This is an emergency and must be provided first aid at the nearest dental clinic. Till then, you must pick up the tooth by the crown and rinse it with tooth storage media such as milk or saline. The avulsed tooth must be preserved and the root should be left untouched.
- If properly preserved, the tooth can be replaced in the socket and splinted by the dentist or else artificial replacement method shall be used.
