What is a dental implant?
Dental Implant is a root and tooth form replacement of a missing or lost tooth in your mouth which helps in functional and esthetic rehabilitation. This is the best treatment option available to replicate as close to a natural tooth as possible.
What is the procedure to place implants?
Step 1 : Damaged tooth removal
- The damaged tooth is removed from the jaw under local anesthesia using as a minor surgery.
Step 2 : Jaw bone preparation
- During this step the selected site is prepared with the corresponding length and diameter of the implant to be placed.
- In a few cases when the bone height or width is not adequate enough for the placement of implant, the dentist places artificial bone in the socket or around the implant. This leads to the formation of new healthy bone, to increase the support of the surrounding bone.
Step 3 : Dental implant placement
- After site preparation, the selected implant is then placed slowly into the prepared site.
Step 4 : Suturing
- The surgical site is then closed using sutures. The sutures are then however later removed after a period of minimum 1 week.
Step 5 : Abutment placement
- At this appointment, a screw like titanium piece is placed on the implant which helps in acting like a connector between the root shaped implant and the artificial tooth.
Step 6 : Artificial tooth placement
- During this procedure a customized and individually fabricated artificial tooth is placed on the abutment
What are the type of implants used?
Following type of implants are used in dentistry:
a) Traditional dental implant / Endosteal implant
- Endosteal implant is placed inside the gum tissue on the jaw bone. They are used with single stage procedures.
- The frame is locked onto the jawbone as the gums recover. Posts attached to the frame protrude via the gums. Artificial teeths are then placed onto the posts, as with endosteal implants.
b) Sub periosteal implant
- These are most commonly used implants for two stage surgeries. These are surgically implanted directly into the jawbone and are an alternative to the bridges or detachable dentures.
- If the underlying gum tissue has cured it may require a second operation to attach an insert to the initial implant. Consequently, the process is done and an artificial tooth is attached inside your mouth.
