Basic Principle of a Scanner:
Originally, a 3D scanner comprises of a light source, one or more cameras, and a motion system supporting several axes for positioning the scanned object towards the light source and cameras. The light source forecasts well-defined lines onto the surface of the object, and the cameras obtain pictures of the lines. Based on the known angle and distance between camera and light source (jointly called the scan head), the 3D sites where the projected light is reflected can be calculated using trigonometry. This measurement-principle is known as “triangulation”. The basic principle works with one camera only, but two cameras enhance scan speed, accuracy and scan coverage.
Check list when comparing dental 3D scanners:
- Accuracy – registered by certified reference objects.
- Scan and workflow time – for well defined indications.
- Range of supported indications – long span bridges, implant bars, removable bars.
- Useful features – impression scanning, texture scanning, die feeder, calibration object and 5 MP cameras.
Additional Function of the 3shape Trios scanner:
Besides accuracy and scan speed, there are several other important differences between dental scanners, the scanner should support long span bridges, customized abutments, accurate implant bars and removable partial dentures.
Dental scanners come with a built-in PC. Scanner PCs need to be upgraded every 2-3 years due to continuously increasing demands on the systems and CAD software and built-in PCs are often tough to upgrade.
Advantages:
- Comfortable for the clinician and patient as well by making the treatment fast and accurate- as compared to the traditional molding techniques that often cause high levels of discomfort in patients, the 3Shape TRIOS dental intraoral scanner offers a quick and convenient method of getting an accurate image of a patient’s teeth in order to create an impression.
- Refines dentist and patient’s communication- display patient’s 3D-impression of a tooth on a screen, immediately after the scan is complete. After seeing a clear HD view of the impression, patients can better understand the condition of their tooth. The scanner also develops impressions in full color.
- Treatment versatility-
– Removable partial denture
– Short term crowns
– Abutments - Better quality impressions and restorations- Restorations made from 3Shape TRIOS dental intraoral scanners deliver more accurate fit and require less adjustment. These scanners are able to measure the shape of a tooth for digital precision.
Disadvantages:
The initial cost associated with the digital equipment is the major disadvantages.
Direct sensors are hard and flexible like a film or any other impression material.
Lack of desire to adapt new dental technology and misunderstanding of new technologies.
